Big German Numbers: 1 to 1 Trillion
Don’t worry. We won’t really be counting from one to a trillion in this lesson. We don’t have to. In the last lesson in this series, I explained that the numbers in German follow specific rules. If you know these rules you can form all of the numbers in German.
Numbers from 100-999 in German
After one hundred you simply say einhundert, zweihundert, dreihundert, vierhundert, f ünfhundert, sechshundert, siebenhundert, achthundert and neunhundert. One can also say elfhunder, zwölfhundert, dreizehnhundert and so on, but officially you have to say eintausend. Then you simply put the numbers together. Be careful. They are still written together.
For example:
eintausendfünfhunderteinunddreißig (1531)
fünftausendsechsundfünfzig (5056)
vierundzwanzigtausendachthundertsiebenundneunzig (24,897)
einhundertfünfundvierzigtausenddreihundertvier (145,304)
Now you can count to neunhundertneunundneunzigtausendneunhundertneunundneunzig (999,999).
Million - Million
Now you write the numbers as two or three numbers next to each other. For example:
eine Million zweihunderttausendvierhundertsechsundzwanzig (1,200,426)
The bigger numbers follow the same rules as the smaller numbers. Then you can count to neunhundertneunundneunzig Millionen neunhundertneunundneunzigtausendneunhundertneunundneunzig (999,999,999).

1 .000 - (ein)tausend
10.000 - zehntausend
100.000 - (ein)hunderttausend
1.000.000 - eine Million

1.000.000.000 - eine Milliarde
10.000.000.000 - zehn Milliarden
100.000.000.000 - (ein)hundert Milliarden
1.000.000.000.000 - eine Billion
