Grammar and Usage Notes

1. Asking if Someone Has Time

The phrase Hast du Zeit? is one of the simplest and most useful ways to ask whether someone is free. You can make it more specific by adding a time expression:

  • Hast du am Wochenende Zeit? – Are you free this weekend?
  • Hast du am Sonntag Zeit? – Are you free on Sunday?
  • Hast du kurz Zeit? – Do you have a minute?

2. Saying You Already Have Plans

In German, you can use etwas vorhaben to say that you have plans. For example:

  • Ich habe schon etwas vor. – I already have plans.
  • Am Vormittag habe ich schon etwas vor. – I already have plans in the morning.

The separable verb vorhaben can also mean “to intend” or “to plan to do something,” but in this dialogue, it means that Lisa already has something planned.

3. Making Polite Suggestions with könnten

The phrase wir könnten means “we could.” It is useful when making suggestions in a softer, more polite way.

  • Wir könnten vielleicht etwas mit den anderen machen. – We could maybe do something with the others.
  • Wir könnten etwas essen gehen. – We could go get something to eat.
  • Wir könnten einen Kaffee trinken. – We could have a coffee.

4. Using Wie wäre es mit ...?

Wie wäre es mit ...? means “How about ...?” It is followed by the dative case, because mit is a dative preposition.

  • Wie wäre es mit einem kleinen Treffen? – How about a little get-together?
  • Wie wäre es mit einem Kaffee? – How about a coffee?
  • Wie wäre es mit dem Café im Stadtzentrum? – How about the café in the city center?

5. Using sich melden

The phrase sich melden means “to get in touch,” “to contact someone,” or “to get back to someone.” It is very common in everyday German.

  • Ich melde mich später bei dir. – I’ll get back to you later.
  • Ich melde mich bei Lisa. – I’ll get in touch with Lisa.
  • Er meldet sich später. – He’ll get back to us later.
