Seeing and looking at someone
German makes a useful distinction between simply seeing something and actively looking at it.
- sehen = to see
- ansehen = to look at
- aussehen = to look, to appear
Ich sehe ihn an.
I look at him.
Die Firma sieht plötzlich nicht mehr harmlos aus.
The company suddenly does not look harmless anymore.
Notice that ansehen and aussehen are separable verbs. In a normal German sentence, the prefix moves to the end: an-sehen, aus-sehen.
When something seems true
Two of the most important verbs for describing an impression are scheinen and erscheinen.
Er scheint ruhig zu sein.
He seems to be calm.
In einem Dokument erscheint mein Name.
My name appears in a document.
Vor dem Gerichtsgebäude erscheint ein Mann mit einer Pistole.
A man with a gun appears in front of the courthouse.
scheinen is often used for an impression or seeming state, while erscheinen is often more literal: something appears, shows up, or becomes visible.
Showing, introducing, and presenting
These verbs are especially useful in stories, interviews, and formal situations.
Er zeigt mir ein paar Fotos und Dokumente.
He shows me a few photos and documents.
Er stellt sich vor.
He introduces himself.
Die Firma stellt sich als harmlos dar.
The company presents itself as harmless.
darstellen is a strong verb for presenting, portraying, or representing something in a certain way. In this story, the company tries to portray itself as harmless, but the evidence says otherwise.
Why these verbs matter in German stories
This lesson is a good example of why learning verbs in context works so well. Instead of memorizing isolated word lists, you hear how German uses one verb to describe what someone sees, another to describe what something looks like, and another to describe how a situation seems.
- sehen / ansehen for looking and noticing
- aussehen / scheinen / erscheinen for appearance and impressions
- zeigen / vorstellen / darstellen for presenting information or identity
That is exactly the kind of German that helps with both listening comprehension and speaking, because you start to recognize the pattern instead of translating every word one by one.
