German Conjunctions: Coordinating, Subordinating & More
German conjunctions connect ideas, actions, and clauses, just like in English. But in German, they also influence sentence structure and word order. This section gives you everything you need to confidently use und, aber, weil, obwohl, entweder… oder, and many more. Below, you'll find lessons on the four main categories of conjunctions and how to use them correctly.
🔗 Coordinating Conjunctions (nebenordnende Konjunktionen)
These conjunctions connect two independent clauses without changing word order. Think: und, aber, oder, denn.
🧱 Subordinating Conjunctions (unterordnende Konjunktionen)
These introduce dependent clauses and push the verb to the end of the clause. Common examples include weil, dass, wenn, obwohl.
⚖️ Two-Part Conjunctions (zweiteilige Konjunktionen)
These work in pairs across two clauses or elements: entweder … oder, sowohl… als auch, nicht nur… sondern auch.
🧭 Adverbial Connectors
Technically not conjunctions, these adverbs function as sentence connectors while affecting word order: also, trotzdem, danach, jedoch.
