Learn German with Tagesschau: How to Turn One News Report into a Complete Lesson

A short Tagesschau report can give you plenty of material for a German lesson. In the video above, I show you how to use one for listening, vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, and speaking practice. Here is how to try the method yourself.

1. Listen for the main idea

Choose a short report about a topic that interests you. Watch it once without subtitles and try to identify who is involved, what happened, and where. You do not need to understand every word.

Write a few questions to guide your second viewing. For the NATO report used in this lesson, two examples are:

  • Wo fand der NATO-Gipfel statt? Where did the NATO summit take place?
  • Worauf haben sich die NATO-Partner verständigt? What did the NATO partners agree on?

Watch again, using German subtitles if needed, and answer in complete German sentences. This gives you something specific to listen for and a chance to practice forming sentences.

2. Choose phrases you can reuse

Pick three or four useful expressions. Learn each one with its preposition or sentence structure, then write your own example. These four phrases from the lesson work well beyond news reports.

sich auf etwas verständigen: to agree on something

Wir haben uns darauf verständigt, das Treffen auf Montag zu verschieben.
We agreed to move the meeting to Monday.

jemandem etwas in Aussicht stellen: to hold out the prospect of something

Mein Chef hat mir eine Beförderung in Aussicht gestellt.
My boss held out the prospect of a promotion.

This describes a possible future benefit. It does not necessarily mean a firm promise.

ins Abseits geraten: to become sidelined

Das Thema Klimaschutz ist während der Wirtschaftskrise ins Abseits geraten.
The issue of climate protection became sidelined during the economic crisis.

etwas infrage stellen: to question or cast doubt on something

Die neuen Ergebnisse stellen die bisherige Theorie infrage.
The new results call the previous theory into question.

3. Practice one grammar pattern

Look for a structure you recognize or want to understand better. The report in this lesson includes modal verbs, which give you useful word order practice.

Sie darf Patriot-Abwehrraketen produzieren.
It is allowed to produce Patriot air-defense missiles.

In this main clause, the conjugated modal verb darf comes second, and the infinitive produzieren goes at the end. In a subordinate clause with weil, the modal verb follows the infinitive:

Ich bleibe heute zu Hause, weil ich noch arbeiten muss.
I am staying home today because I still have to work.

Write two or three sentences using the same pattern. For more practice, see my guide to German conjunctions and word order.

You can also study prepositions in context: bei ihrem Gipfel uses the dative, while angesichts der vielen Krisen uses the genitive. My German cases hub explains those case patterns.

4. Repeat a sentence, then explain it yourself

Choose one sentence for pronunciation practice. Listen, pause, and repeat it, paying attention to stress and rhythm. Break longer sentences into manageable chunks:

Darauf haben sich die NATO-Partner / bei ihrem Gipfel in Ankara / verständigt.
The NATO partners agreed on that at their summit in Ankara.

Once you can say it comfortably, explain the idea in simpler German:

Die NATO-Länder haben sich in Ankara getroffen und sich auf gemeinsame Projekte geeinigt.
The NATO countries met in Ankara and agreed on joint projects.

You can use words you already know. The task is to explain the meaning in your own words.

5. Summarize, respond, and listen again

Write or record a short summary covering the main points. Then add your opinion or a question you would ask someone about the topic. These sentence starters can help:

  • In dem Bericht geht es um … The report is about …
  • Meiner Meinung nach … In my opinion …
  • Ich frage mich, ob … I wonder whether …

For conversation practice, discuss the report with a partner or rehearse with Teacher AI. Ask follow-up questions and try using the expressions you collected.

Finally, listen to the original report again without stopping. Check which phrases you now recognize and whether you can follow the main points more easily.

Adjust the work to your goal. For listening practice, spend more time on the questions and repeated viewing. For speaking practice, spend more time explaining and discussing the report. Start with a short section you can work through comfortably.
